Cradled between the Caucasus and the Asian Sub-continent is the ancient and historically fascinating world of Central Asia. Within this region are some of the oldest towns in the world, some of the Earth’s most diabolical terrain, and some of the world’s most fascinating people.
Sharing borders with the Middle East and the Far East, five former republics of the U.S.S.R., known collectively as the ‘Stans,’ occupy the heart of Asia. Its peoples are as diverse as its culture is dramatic, having been influenced both by the conquest of the Turks and Mongols in the 9th and 14th Centuries, as well as the domination of Russia in the 19th and 20th Centuries.
The people of this area, once ruled by Genghis Khan, have developed their identity from the likenesses of Turkmen and Mongols, only a generation or two removed from being nomads, and forced Communistic dogma that at one time attempted to smother the society in collectivization.
There are an estimated 104 million people living in this region, and virtually none of them know Jesus. Another 200 million Asian Muslims to their immediate south suffer the same ignorance.
Nearly 90% of the people in the ‘Stans’ are Islamic. The number of proclaimed Protestant Christians in this geographic area is less than one percent. It is estimated that there are thousands of Christians martyred in this region every year.
